Who runs this

UsedAlert is built and written by one person, Joe Lopriore. It is not a company, a content farm, or a team of reviewers. That is worth saying plainly because it sets what you should expect from the guides: careful research, sourced where it matters, and clearly labelled where it is opinion.

Why it exists

In late 2025 I needed a replacement sanitizer cell for a pool. New, it was a genuinely painful number. Amazon Resale had one in Very Good condition for roughly a third of that, and it arrived fine and is still running.

The annoyance was everything before that. There is no way to tell Amazon "email me when this specific item shows up used in a condition I would accept, under a price I would pay." You check the page, refresh it, forget about it for a week, and find out later that a Like New unit came and went. UsedAlert is the tool I wanted: a watchlist of specific items, with the condition grades and price ceiling you are actually willing to accept, and an email when something matches.

How the buying guides are researched

The guides are researched, not review-bench tested. I want to be exact about that rather than imply a lab that does not exist:

• First-hand. Where I have owned or bought the thing, the guide says so. Everything else is research.
• Manufacturer documentation. Warranty terms, specifications, parts availability, and repair procedures come from the manufacturer or retailer, and are linked so you can check them yourself.
• Safety guidance. Where a claim touches safety, it is sourced to the relevant authority rather than to received wisdom. The car-seat section of our caution guide is a worked example: the widely repeated "any crash ends a seat" rule is stricter than what NHTSA actually publishes.
• Judgement is labelled. When a guide says a grade is worth buying or a price is worth paying, that is opinion. It is written as opinion, not as a finding.

Marketplace terms, warranties, and parts availability change. Each guide carries the date it was last reviewed for accuracy. If something has gone stale or is simply wrong, tell me and I will fix it.

How the site makes money

UsedAlert is free and has no ads. It earns affiliate commission: as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, and we participate in the eBay Partner Network. If you buy through a link here, the price you pay is the same and the site earns a small commission.

That creates an obvious incentive to tell you to buy things, so the guides are written to push back on it. Five Used Purchases That Deserve Extra Caution exists for that reason, and the buying verdicts in each guide include the conditions under which you should not buy.
